Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has linked up with Panasonic in a partnership that will see innovative hydrogen fuel cell technology deployed throughout the Greater Manchester region.
Panasonic’s RE100 technology will be deployed at sites such as hospitals, marking what GMCA says will be the “first real use cases in the UK”. RE100 works by harnessing green hydrogen and fuel cells to supply 100% renewable electricity to industrial and public sector buildings.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed by the partners, along with SSE Energy Solutions, Electricity North West, Manchester Metropolitan University and Carlton Power, with the collaboration set to last for five years.
SSE Energy Solutions will work with the partners to identify potential trial sites, as well as providing the necessary energy infrastructure and generation, while Electricity North West will oversee connections to the grid. Manchester Metropolitan University will contribute leading research and knowledge in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry, with Carlton Power providing green hydrogen from its Trafford scheme.
