Digital Catapult has launched a Hydrogen Sensor Accelerator, striving to ‘propel hydrogen technology into the UK’s industrial landscape’.
Five businesses have been selected to take part in the first-of-its-kind programme, which will run for eight weeks, and aim to accelerate the development of sensor products for UK industry, helping to grow the UK’s hydrogen energy sector in a sustainable way in the process.
The companies taking part include eLansys, which develops solutiosn to enable intelligent places through effective understanding and automation, Hy-Met, which is a deep-tech instrumentation start-up that has a fluid flow/property measurement meter for hydrogen, and Bohr, which was established in the summer of 2021 to bring fresh ideas and enabling technology to the renewable gases market.
The other businesses selected are DefProc Engineering, an innovation partner which specialises in R&D, design for manfuacturing and small-run production, and Gas Sensing Solutions, which is seeking to pioneer the development of innovative, robust and efficient solid-state sensing technologies for optimised, high-performance, ultra-low-power gas detection and monitoring.
Through supporting these businesses to develop and optimise their products, the accelerator will help meet growing demand from UK businesses turning to hydrogen as a key part of their sustainability strategies. Needing tools to produce, store and use hydrogen safely and responsibly, the sensors developed through this programme will be a critical tool in support of this.
Through the programme, the sensors and any other solutions resulting from it will pave the way for safety in hydrogen plants and optimised levels of efficiency, while they will also maintain quality, monitor infrastructure and support the overall growth of hydrogen as a reliable energy source in the UK.
