Loganair and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions have joined forces, striving to have the first operational hydrogen-electric Britten-Norman Islander in the skies above the Orkney region from 2027.
The pair have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), allowing them to step up their level of collaboration – already established through Project Fresson. This now spans operational requirements and design, standards and regulations, infrastructure development, and stakeholder engagement, with the pair working to ensuring the commercial rollout of the hydrogen-powered Islander.
Loganair’s Executive Chairman, Peter Simpson said: “The short haul routes we operate in Orkney and the challenging weather conditions we face, make the ideal test bed for hydrogen-electric aircraft, and we are incredibly proud that we could be offering the world’s first commercial zero emissions flights.”
