The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) have teamed up to drive fusion energy development.
Signing a collaboration framework agreement, the pair will work together on the development of technologies in relation to the management of tritium – a fusion energy fuel.
In particular, hydrogen isotope management will be a major area of focus, namely safely removing, processing and reinjecting fuel to the plasma in a continuous manner. This is considered a key part of the fusion energy cycle as tritium must be separated from other hydrogen isotopes in the exhaust gas, ensuring it can be recycled and reused as a fusion fuel.
The first project through the collaboration will see samples of candidate materials for isotope separation analysed at both CNL’s facilities in Ontario and UKAEA’s facilities in Oxfordshire.
