GeoPura plots accelerated green hydrogen expansion in the UK

GeoPura is targeting an accelerated expansion of green hydrogen in the UK after closing a £56mn investment round, with the funds to help expand production capacity, grow a specialist workforce and increase deployment of its power generation technology.

The financing, which includes a £30mn commitment from the UK Infrastructure Bank, will see GeoPura ramp up the manufacturing and supply of its Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) at its Newcastle-based facility. These HPUs have already been used across the Ministry of Defence, National Grid and the BBC, replacing traditional diesel generators and the subsequent emissions.

According to GeoPura, its HPU technology is a perfect example of how the transition to sustainable energy can be accelerated, despite facing grid challenges. With electricity demand increasing because of a growing number of electric vehicles and other clean technologies, supplementary power sources will become increasingly important – this is where HPUs come in, preventing gridlock, providing the levels of capacity needed and helping to secure a sustainable energy future.

GeoPura is looking to deploy over 3,600 units by 2033, working in collaboration with partner, Siemens Energy, to mass manufacture them.

That is not the only place the investment will be directed, however, with it also set to be used to help GeoPura transform an old coal-fired power station into a clean energy hub. It will back the 50/50 joint venture it has with JG Pears – the HyMamham Power Green Hydrogen Project in the East Midlands – in further developing hydrogen production capacity and capability, with investments made in storage and distribution assets. These are set to be particularly crucial to manage potential supply risks associated with growth.
