Low carbon hydrogen demand in the North West has the potential to support up to 2GW of hydrogen production by 2030, research has found.
The North West Hydrogen Alliance (NWHA) detailed how industry and power generation are set to be the first movers will be a significant take-up of hydrogen. They are expected to be responsible for up to 11TWh of hydrogen demand by 2030, with total demand across the region is projected to vary between 4.5 and 12.5TWh. This equates to a production capacity of between 0.7 and 2GW.
Looking further ahead, total demand in the region could stretch between 32 and 48TWh by mid-century. This would support as much as 7.5GW of hydrogen production.
It highlighted how the North West of England and North Wales are ideally suited to drive early adoption of hydrogen, given a number of key characteristics. These include this large industrial energy demand, local sites that are suitable for CO2 storage and salt layers that are suitable for salt cavern hydrogen storage.
