GeoPura has concluded a trial with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) that has seen hydrogen powered charging facilities, generating enough electricity for around 120,000 miles of travel.
The trial commenced in August 2023, focused on an initial three sites of RAF Leeming, Devonport Naval Base and Merville Barracks in Colchester, before then being extended to include HMS Excellent Portsmouth and RAF Northolt. Following its success, new initiatives that focus on hydrogen as an energy system for Defence are now being planned.
Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) were used to convert hydrogen into electricity. This was then harnessed to charge electric vehicles through fast-charging posts. As well as proving reliable and environmentally friendly and ensuring seamless rapid charging without any emissions, the HPUs bypassed the constraints of grid capacity which meant the MOD could provide power even in areas where grid upgrades have either been delayed or are not feasible.
