Statera Energy has now submitted plans for what will be the UK’s first utility scale green hydrogen project.
At 3GW, Kintore Hydrogen will be the largest project of its kind in Europe and play a key role in helping to balance a renewables-led power system, making use of surplus renewable energy which it uses to produce green hydrogen. This will help the development of offshore wind, while also play a pivotal role in decarbonising carbon intensive sectors in the UK.
It is set to create up to 3,500 jobs throughout construction, before providing up to 200 high quality jobs onsite when operational. The first 500MW of operational capacity is due to be online by 2028 and once it reaches the eventual capacity of 3GW, it will save up to 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
Tom Vernon, CEO of Statera Energy, said: “Over the coming years, the sheer volume of wind generation coming onto the system in the UK will make electrolysers critical for harnessing wind energy that would otherwise go to waste. Kintore Hydrogen will convert surplus wind power to green hydrogen to be used when and where it is needed most.”
Vernon further added that the project is designed to fully make the most of the potential that hydrogen has to offer.
He continued: “The location and scale of this project means it can make best use of surplus wind power, lowering hydrogen production costs. It will help balance the grid, contribute to the UK’s energy security, and support the decarbonisation of the UK’s hard-to-abate industries and power sector.”
