UK HyRES – the UK Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels, based at the University of Bath – has awarded a £3 million funding package to 10 new projects.
The 10 new projects join 14 already underway and cover everything from hydrogen production and storage through to end use and alternative carriers. The project leaders are the Universities of Glasgow, Aberdeen, Oxford, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Surrey and Northumbria, as well as Imperial College London, with their initiatives striving to address obstacles that stand in the way of greater adoption of hydrogen and low carbon liquid fuels.
Areas of exploration among the projects include the safe transportation of hydrogen by sea and storage in port bunkering facilities, the potential for North Sea offshore locations to be repurposed for hydrogen production, the possibility for new techniques to produce hydrogen from seawater, and how hydrogen can be more sustainably and efficiently produced through new electrolysis models. The projects will also aim to build the UK’s skill base in the hydrogen and liquid fuels, with the UK HyRES hub striving to help the UK work towards achieving net zero.
Professor Tim Mays from the University of Bath’s Department for Chemical Engineering said: “This gives UK HyRES a comprehensive base of top-tier research expertise to help answer the key questions around how we can use hydrogen and zero-carbon alternative liquid fuels to help reach Net Zero.”
