Project plots sustainable hydrogen supply chain

Cranfield University and a consortium of partners are looking to revolutionise the hydrogen supply chain between Australia and the UK.

Led by Modular Clinton Global (MCG), the HyPACT project (Hydrogen Production and Supply Chain Affordability, Certification and Traceability) is striving to improve the transparency and sustainability in hydrogen production. Emphasis in particular is placed on the importance of emissions certification, lifecycle emissions and supply chain.

The goal of HyPACT is to map the hydrogen supply chain across continents, exploring various production pathways. This will see comprehensive life cycle assessments developed and a digitised emissions certification framework for hydrogen produced through different methods. With these solutions applied to industry ventures, including Hadean Energy’s electrolyser and one of EDF’s UK-based hydrogen projects, HyPACT Is aiming to show the efficacy and scalability of its supply chain analysis tools.

Clinton Liu, MCG CEO, explained: “There’s much talk about hydrogen as the carbon-free fuel of the future, but for that to come to pass we need to substantially develop cost-effective production and supply chains. This project highlights the global impact this technology could have and will help push the developing industry in an exciting new direction.”
