Perenco CCS has hailed a “significant milestone” for Project Poseidon after the first tonnes of CO2 were successfully injected into a depleted reservoir.
Perenco described this as a “major operational, technical and logistical achievement” and the result of “great teamwork” across London, Norwich, Paris, Amsterdam and Aberdeen, with the successful CO2 injection marking a UK first.
This test is striving to fully unlock the Poseidon Carbon Capture and Storage project which is expected to have an initial injection capacity of 1.5Mtpa, before climbing to reach 40Mtpa from 2029. It is the result of months of prep work which has taken place from the ERDA rig in the Southern North Sea.
Louis Hannert, CCS Manager at Perenco, said: “This is a groundbreaking test and the results, which are expected in the coming weeks, will enable us to further develop our approach to delivering the Poseidon CCS project. The energy industry is uniquely placed to use its geological and engineering expertise for this important initiative as we move down the path to Net Zero.”
