The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI)’s Hydrogen Capability Network (HCN) has found the UK has strong research capability in many of the areas of liquid-hydrogen powered aircraft technologies.
Where that is not the case, however, is for on-aircraft cryogenic hydrogen fuel storage and distribution systems. The HCN explained that the challenge especially refers to the storage and distribution of hydrogen fuel between the fuel tank and propulsion source, across a wide range of fluid temperatures and pressures.
Therefore, supporting the ecosystem to accelerate the development of fundamental knowledge is crucial to ensuring the UK can contribute to the development of these technologies and realise zero carbon aircraft. Areas in need of particular focus include materials, such as fundamental material behaviour at cryogenic temperatures and hydrogen environments; thermofluids, meaning cryogenic hydrogen thermofluids behaviour; and health and safety, referring to cryogenic health and safety protocols, modelling and testing.
The HCN is now working to develop research proposals to address these topics, aligned with key research gaps and industrial priorities. Laura Cuss, HCN Programme Director said: “The UK has a strong history in fuel storage and systems for conventional aircraft which underlines the importance of advancing capability in hydrogen to maintain and grow market share.”
