UK Energy Storage signs hydrogen generation and import agreements

UK Energy Storage (UKEn) – a UK Oil & Gas (UKOG) subsidiary – has announced two Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with Portland Port to target joint venture hydrogen opportunities.

These opportunities are centred around the Port and UKEn’s South Dorset Storage site and include generating 1GW of green hydrogen through import by ship of green hydrogen carrier liquids into Portland Port. The produced hydrogen would then be piped locally into UKEn’s nearby South Dorset salt cavern hydrogen storage site, before then being transported onwards to the wider UK.

The other opportunity is twofold – generation of green hydrogen through electrolysis within the port, striving to capture excess locally generated clean renewable energy in UKEn’s South Dorset storage, and hydrogen to power generation within Portland Port which will be designed to meet initial power requirements for the South Dorset storage site.

UKEn is now intending to formalise these agreements with the port and is pledging further announcements in due course.

Stephen Sanderson, UKOG Chief Executive, said: “The addition of a potential material source of green hydrogen, directly linked to UKEn’s South Dorset storage site, would both enhance our project’s national significance and the prospects of UKEn securing revenue support in the government’s forthcoming Hydrogen Storage procurement process. The revenue support case would likely be further strengthened by the future potential for UKEn’s proposed at scale Hydrogen Battery allied to planned offshore Dorset wind power.”
