Suffolk’s first hydrogen buses have officially taken to the road as part of a pilot scheme, marking a “big step forward” for clean transport in the county.
Three hydrogen double-decker buses, as well as one single-decker bus, have started to transport Sizewell C workers to and from work, testing operational performance. Should this pilot prove successful, then Sizewell C workers could end up being taken to work by a hydrogen bus for the duration of the power station’s construction.
With Sizewell C having pledged to deliver 60% of its construction materials by rail and sea in a bid to limit construction emissions, the use of hydrogen buses could go a long way to helping further decarbonise its construction.
As well as this, Sizewell say the move could help to kickstart the hydrogen economy in Suffolk. It will provide opportunities for further hydrogen uptake and accelerate transport decarbonisation in the county, meaning more clean jobs and training opportunities to support the emergence of this new technology. For its part, Sizewell C could order up to 150 hydrogen buses, creating the biggest hydrogen bus fleet in the UK should this pilot scheme prove to be successful.
