The government has launched a call for evidence on innovative hydrogen to power projects that are able to deliver by 2030, ahead of large-scale enabling hydrogen infrastructure.
It explained how the successful roll out of dispatchable power technologies is set to be crucial to achieving clean power by 2030 and enabling an acceleration to net zero by 2050. Hydrogen to power is one of the technologies that can provide low carbon inter-seasonal storage, as well as a decarbonisation pathway for unabated gas.
The barriers facing these projects, however, include critical dependence on access to enabling grid-scale hydrogen infrastructure, including new build transport and storage facilities that have long lead-in times. That is why the government is interested in innovative projects that would not be reliant on this and could demonstrate operation by 2030, meaning they could play a key role in supporting the clean power mission and laying the foundations for widescale hydrogen to power.
It is particularly interested in technical information to help it understand in greater detail the type of innovative hydrogen to power projects that could deliver rapidly. This includes the scope of planned projects, the timescales set out for them, the costs involved and the barriers standing in their way.
The call for evidence will close at 11:59PM on 12 May 2025.
