A total of 27 projects have been shortlisted to progress to the next stage of the government’s flagship Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR).
Projects selected to advance to the second round (HAR2) include projects that could make use of hydrogen in decarbonising manufacturing and industrial processes, such as ammonia production, new clean power generation, glass manufacturing, brick making and sustainable aviation fuel production. In the next round, they will have to pass a “rigorous due diligence stage” to continue forwards, with value for money and affordability a key determiner for projects securing government support.
As well as supporting clean energy ambitions and decarbonising emission-intensive industries, hydrogen has already led to £400 million of private sector investment in towns in cities across the country, including Milford Haven in Wales and High Marnham in Nottinghamshire, creating more than 700 direct jobs in construction and operations in the process.
The government emphasised how continued support for hydrogen will help create thousands more jobs in the sector and prove instrumental in reindustrialising the UK’s manufacturing regions. This will include roles for apprentices, graduates and technically trained professionals, including engineers, welders, skilled construction workers, pipefitters and operations specialists.
