National Gas invests to make gas network fit for future

National Gas has announced a £350 million investment to replace existing gas compressors with new state-of-the-art equipment at Peterborough, St Fergus and Wormington.

The equipment, which is being made by Siemens Energy, Baker Hughes and Solar Turbines, will ensure National Gas can maintain Britain’s energy security and keep the National Transmission System (NTS) providing gas to major industries, power stations and businesses throughout the country, while still supporting around 1,00 jobs.

A crucial detail in the announcement is the reveal that the new compressors will be future-proofed to deal with the gases of tomorrow. This means they will be ready to compress blends of hydrogen which can then be transported around the existing NTS.
