Researchers to tackle hydrogen transportation with AI

Coventry University Group has joined forces with the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) to take on hydrogen transportation challenges with AI.

Researchers from Coventry University’s Institute of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering and the Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems have linked up with VIT engineering and manufacturing academics to use generative AI to develop safe and cost-effective storage and transportation methods for hydrogen.

They noted how hydrogen embrittlement occurs mostly in steels, iron, nickel and their alloys – often used in hydrogen transportation – which sees them become brittle and fracture because of the introduction and diffusion of hydrogen into the material. This can result in catastrophic failures and hydrogen leakage and is something that needs to be solved to fully realise transportation of hydrogen.

The two-year initiative will run until 2026 and has been funded by the British Council UKIERI (UK-India Education and Research Initiative) – a multi-stakeholder programme that is striving to strengthen research, leadership and education between the UK and India.

Commenting, Dr Arivazhagan Anbalagan, Assistant Professor in Digital Manufacturing at Coventry University: “As hydrogen becomes a key clean energy focus, developing safe, cost-effective storage and transportation is crucial. Using AI to predict and prevent hydrogen embrittlement will aim to enhance storage and transportation system’s safety and reliability.”
