Centrica and Equinor have announced a major new deal which, they say, will bolster UK energy security and pave the way for future delivery of hydrogen.
The 10-year agreement, which is worth more than £20 billion, will see Centrica taking delivery of five billion cubic metres of gas every year through to 2035. With the UK having imported close to two-thirds (66.2%) of its gas demand in 2024, over half of this (50.2%) came from Norway. It is a relationship only growing in strategic importance, considering this figure has climbed significant over the past two years.
Crucially, the contract does allow for natural gas sales to be replaced with hydrogen in the future, which will help to further strengthen the UK’s hydrogen economy and pave the way for a “burgeoning hydrogen market”.
