Ofgem has confirmed £96 million in funding, enabling one of the UK’s biggest hydrogen infrastructure programmes – East Coast Hydrogen – to take a significant step forward.
East Coast Hydrogen is set to see existing gas pipelines repurposed and new ones built, paving the way for clean hydrogen to be delivered at scale across the North East, the Humber region, Yorkshire and the East Midlands. Ofgem’s funding will enable engineering, planning and public consultation on proposals to be carried out.
Mark Horsley is Chief Executive at Northern Gas Networks – leading the partnership bringing East Coast Hydrogen to life, alongside National Gas and Cadent – and said: “Our East Coast Hydrogen partnership represents a clear route to driving growth for regional economies, job creation and decarbonisation support for industries that otherwise would find it difficult to meet net zero targets.”
Horsley continued: “This funding is essential to determining the technical work needed to build hydrogen infrastructure, in order to understand how a hydrogen network can be operational in time to meet government net zero plans.”
