UK and Ireland plot hydrogen interconnector

National Gas has secured a new partnership with Gas Networks Ireland (GNI), paving the way for long-term collaboration on clean energy.

Under this new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), National Gas and GNI have a shared ambition to explore either a new or repurposed interconnector that runs between the UK and Ireland which is capable of transporting 100% hydrogen. This is still in the early conceptual phase, but the pair are eager to identify potential supply and demand, key barriers and regulatory changes that are needed to ensure the project can succeed.

Laying the foundations for closer collaboration on biomethane gases as well as hydrogen, along with blends of these gas in the current system, the MoU should enable National Gas and GNI to better share information and outcomes from their respective operational improvement activities, as well as help them explore mutually beneficial projects.
