Hydrogen East

Hydrogen East was launched in July 2020 with the objective of advancing the hydrogen economy and supporting the hydrogen value chain across the East of England. It operates as a central body coordinating efforts across various sectors to explore, promote, and implement hydrogen solutions. The organisation’s activities are now focused on an extended East of England geography, incorporating the South East region, aiming to capitalise on its potential as a leader in hydrogen development.

Hydrogen East was co-founded by Nigel Cornwall and Johnathan Reynolds, both leaders in the UK energy sector across supply and demand, wholesale and retail markets, and working with regulators. Nigel retired in 2023 after helping lay the essential groundwork for the organisation and the regional cluster. Johnathan remains involved as Director, supporting the cluster’s ongoing work, in addition to leading the Opergy Group, which provides ongoing resources and support for the cluster and its growing network.

Mission​

The mission of Hydrogen East is to position the region as a premier region for hydrogen energy by leveraging its unique assets and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Key objectives include:

  • Enhancing the local supply chains position in the production, distribution, and end-use of sustainable alternative fuels.
  • Supporting the adoption and development of hydrogen related technologies.
  • Increasing awareness and understanding the role of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives in achieving emission reduction targets.
  • Facilitating public, private and research sector partnerships.

Strategy

Hydrogen East employs a multi-faceted strategy to achieve its mission:

  • Research and Analysis: Conducting comprehensive studies on the hydrogen value chain, identifying opportunities for the region, and assessing the potential for projects like the Bacton Energy Hub.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Organising forums, workshops, and collaborative platforms to bring together industry, government, academia, and communities.
  • Project Facilitation: Actively participating in the development and support of hydrogen related projects within the region, focusing on scalability and sustainability.
  • Policy Advocacy: Working with policymakers to create a conducive regulatory environment for hydrogen applicable projects.

Since its inception, Hydrogen East has initiated several key projects, including detailed studies on hydrogen market opportunities and the feasibility of hydrogen production and infrastructure projects. These efforts have laid the groundwork for the East of England to emerge as a significant player in the UK’s hydrogen economy.

Looking forward, Hydrogen East aims to continue its role as a facilitator and advocate for hydrogen related projects, with plans to expand its research, increase stakeholder engagement, and support the implementation, application, and use of alternative fuels. The ultimate vision is for the East of England to not only meet its decarbonisation ambitions but also serve as a blueprint for hydrogen related project adoption nationally and internationally.
