Multi-million pound deal agreed to develop hydrogen from waste projects

Peel Environment has entered into a £130mn agreement with Waste2Tricity and PowerHouse Energy to develop 11 waste plastic to hydrogen facilities.

The deal was confirmed on 12 August, with planning application set to be submitted for the first of these facilities in Protos, Cheshire. The £7mn project will produce hydrogen from 25 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic every day, with this then used to power road vehicles – firstly buses and heavy goods vehicles, before being rolled out to hydrogen cars.

The agreement will see Peel Environmental provide real estate and infrastructure support, with the developer being Waste2Tricity and PowerHouse Energy acting as technology and engineering services provider. Peel Environmental is now looking for other sites across its portfolio to deliver the other 10 projects.

Myles Kitcher of Peel Environmental said: “Hydrogen is increasingly being seen as a vital part of our journey to zero carbon. This deal could be transformational in delivering a UK first technology that can generate local sources of hydrogen but also provide a solution to plastic waste.”
